Decarbonisation

Avantis’ Approach

Avantis offers a bespoke ship energy efficiency assessment to support Ship Owners, Operators, and Managers in achieving compliance with the Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).

Our bolstered Energy Optimization Department assists in EEXI compliance, Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) calculation, and evaluates decarbonization and efficiency technologies for optimal solutions in EEXI and CII reduction and return on investment (ROI).

The Critical Path to Low-Carbon Shipping

After extensive discussions with clients and technology providers, we have developed a three-phase “Smart Engineering Approach.” This includes an independent study utilizing our engineers and data from leading technology providers, aiming to integrate the best-performing systems based on vessel type.

Our “Smart Approach” provides a quick assessment of current EEXI & CII and an initial study of available fuel consumption reduction and decarbonization solutions.

Avantis’ Decarbonisation Roadmap

  • Phase 1 – Feasibility Study

In Phase 1, we calculate the current EEXI (attained) and CII and conduct a feasibility study for decarbonization. This includes assessing potential operational changes like speed reduction, engine power limitation, and route optimization, as well as evaluating existing systems and equipment for upgrades or reductions in power consumption. We also examine energy efficiency technologies such as air lubrication systems, wind-assisted propulsion, marine batteries, and exhaust gas cleaning systems. The study culminates in a high-level report detailing the potential energy savings and ROI.

  • Phase 2 – Solution Selection & Integration

Phase 2 involves selecting the best efficiency solutions and conducting detailed calculations on energy savings and ROI. We assess potential paired technologies for greater efficiency, conduct detailed operating and environmental analyses, and perform a desktop efficiency survey. This phase includes evaluating engine power limitations, fuel consumption, and hydrodynamic performance, leading to an accurate calculation of improved EEXI ratings. The process concludes with a detailed report and high-level fleet analysis.

  • Phase 3: Engineering & Design

In Phase 3, we conduct vessel surveys and 3D scanning, followed by conceptual and basic design work. We obtain Classification Society approval and perform detailed engineering and design. The integration of chosen systems can be executed globally through turnkey installations, which provide a single point of contact, or a “Shipyard Ready” approach, which minimizes shipyard time and costs. Additionally, we offer commissioning assistance and shipyard supervision to ensure seamless implementation of the new systems.

Fuel Saving & Optimisation

  • Wind Power

    Wind Power Installation Specialists

Wind power is being embraced by the marine industry as a leading technology in reducing its carbon footprint. As the threat of global warming becomes an ever more present issue ship owners are looking for inventive ways to make their fleet more environmentally friendly and Avantis is here to help realise those ambitions.

Using our wealth of engineering experience and ability to work with a range of manufacturing partners, clients will be able to choose a system that perfectly suits their individual requirements.

    Our turn-key service package includes:

    • Feasibility study and survey supported by 3D scanning onboard to understand parameters.
    • Quotation, planning and full scope of works.
    • Detailed project schedule.
    • Creation of preliminary P&IDs for the Flettner Rotor and associated plant equipment.
    • Creation of preliminary materials list.
    • Creation of electrical load schedule.
    • Procurement of all materials and equipment with delivery to site.
    • Mechanical and electrical installation in shipyard and at port whilst the vessel is in service.
    • Projects executed by an experienced team of on-site managers and tradesmen.
    • Commissioning of the new system.
  • Air Lubrication Systems

Air Lubrication Systems (ALS) – 5%+ Efficiency Savings

Air Lubrication Systems (ALS) have been developed to provide a constant flow of air bubbles to lubricate the flat bottom area of a vessel’s hull during sailing to reduce drag and increase efficiency.

On already proven systems, efficiency savings of above 5% from multiple sea trials have been recorded and verified by Lloyds Register, HSVA, Shell and Southampton University. Avantis has the experience, knowledge and ability to execute full turn-key solutions relating to ALS retrofits irrespective of manufacturer or vessel type.

    Our turn-key service package includes:

    • Feasibility study and survey supported by 3D scanning onboard to understand parameters
    • Quotation, planning and full scope of works
    • Detailed project schedule
    • Creation of preliminary P&IDs for the ALS and associated plant equipment
    • Creation of preliminary materials list
    • Creation of electrical load schedule

As well as installation during a dry-docking period, our technical team is capable of undertaking parts of the installation process whilst the vessel is in service giving prospective clients more flexibility and cost-effective ways to retrofit an ALS. Our internationally positioned team is perfectly suited to undertake any ALS project anywhere in the world with support from our corporate office in the UK.

  • Engine Conversions/Upgrades

    Methanol/Methane/LNG

Converting heavy fuel oil main and auxiliary engines to run on LNG has been recognised as a key strategy to reduce carbon pollution. Vessel operators and owners are turning to LNG as a far cleaner alternative to more traditional marine fuel oils. Avantis offers bespoke turn-key conversions including feasibility study, design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of new systems. Our experienced engineering team can offer a flexible installation schedule where ride along squads can reduce the time required to drydock a vessel. We are committed to offering operators and owners a smart and cost effective solution to making their fleet greener.

    Our conversion offering includes:

    • Cryogenic tank manufacture
    • Cryogenic heat exchangers manufacture
    • Skid manufacture
    • Piping manufacture
    • Electrical instrumentation and control
    • On-site integration
    • Commissioning and testing
  • Cold Ironing

    Cold Ironing

In recent years port and vessel operators have both been looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact that ships have during their time spent in port. This is due to tightening restrictions on vessels being able to use their diesel-powered onboard generators to generate electricity whilst they are in port. To solve this problem shore power from the grid is used to supply electricity to vessels in port, this is known as cold ironing and has been proven to reduce CO2 emissions for the area surrounding ports. Financially, cold ironing can also be attractive to vessel operators as it reduces their consumption of higher grade and more expensive diesel fuel used whilst in port for the onboard generators.

Avantis offers full turn-key cold ironing solutions installing the infrastructure and connections needed within ports so they can facilitate docking vessels. In addition to this, Our team can also design, supply and retrofit the control systems, switch gear and connections needed to change over from ship power to shore power onboard any vessel type.

    Our turn-key service package includes:

    • Feasibility study and survey supported by 3D scanning onboard to understand parameters
    • Quotation, planning and full scope of works
    • Detailed project schedule
    • Creation of preliminary P&IDs for the electrical equipment
    • Creation of preliminary materials list
    • Creation of electrical load schedule
    • Procurement of all materials and equipment with delivery to site
    • Mechanical and electrical installation in shipyard and whilst the vessel is in service
    • Mechanical and electrical installation on-site within the port
    • Projects executed by an experienced team of on-site managers and tradesmen
    • Commissioning of the new system
